
Third, and most importantly: this sounds like a rich area for RP. If you're simply adding mechanics because you think it's better that way instead of a mechanical reason. Keep in mind this cheating is different than what I'll call a "balance check" - if they're rolling encounters without trying and they're getting bored you might need to examine your encounter-building technique.

Use combat to punctuate scenes, show the consequences of PC action, or reveal information about the plot. You have the power to kill them without effort and immediately if you so choose, simply drop a tarrasque, or ancient red dragon at their feet and be done with it. That's basically the only way the DM can cheat. Second: don't change the mechanics because you don't feel you're not hurting the players enough. Find ways to make their lives difficult due to their characters' personalities, tendencies, and prejudices rather than their classes, feats, and equipment. Your DM pleasure should stem from stumping, tricking, teasing, or putting the PCs on shaky moral or character grounds. You're not going to win that fight unless you cheat (see below).
